Fashion Inspired by Adventure Time Part I: Princess Bubblegum and Marceline

WHAT TIME IS IT? Adventure Time is a strange "kid's show" on Cartoon Network that takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Earth known as Ooo. The denizens of Ooo are all mutated life forms as a result of the "Mushroom War" except for Finn, the hero and only known human. Despite its bright colors and simplistic art-style, Adventure Time's stories often have thinly-veiled adult humor and sometimes morbid themes which accounts for its large following outside its target audience.

Adventure Time also tips its hat toward various geek cultures through references such as D&D alignments and video game-like "boss fights" and music. It also has ton of unique characters, so for my first installment I decided to focus on the two main ladies -- Princess Bubblegum of the Candy Kingdom and Marceline the Vampire.

I love Adventure Time for characters like Princess Bubblegum. At first glance she's a typical pink-wearing castle-living princess cartoon character, but she has a passion for science and serves as a voice of reason  for the heroes as well as the citizens of the Candy Kingdom. That said, she can also do some morally questionable things such as attempting to bring deceased Candy People back from the dead. Twice.

Even though PB has a default costume, she has a range of other outfits ranging from casual to dressy that all play on the same color scheme of bright pink and purple. A bright pink dress with a purple sash sets the base for this Peebles inspired outfit, with pastel lavender accessories to tone down the brightness. A rhinestone candy necklace serves as a shout-out to her servant, Peppermint Butler.

Marceline is a thousand year old vampire who plays bass guitar and eats shades of red. Marceline is similar to Princess Bubblegum in that she can also be morally questionable, but Marceline doesn't hide behind any pretense of being righteousness. She's a pretty classic chaotic neutral who likes to play tricks that make her seem much nastier than she actually is.

Marceline has a casual goth style and usually dresses in black, red or grey. Plaid and stripes are popular prints in her wardrobe, and she can go out in the daytime with the aid of a sunhat or parasol.

Leopard Maxi Dress

Last night, I went out to the Iron Horse in downtown Milwaukee to their outdoor dining patio. I absolutely could not have asked for a more beautiful Wisconsin night, it was mild while the sun was out and just cool enough for a light sweater once it went down.

I used to be terrified of maxi dresses, I assumed they would devour my 5'2" frame. Buuut, I fell in love with this leopard print number (from Target, no less) and it actually ended up looking a lot better than anticipated. I've since begun a tepid love affair with maxi dresses -- they're perfect for looking put together and glamorous when in reality I haven't shaved my legs for a month.

I normally wear this without anything over it, but since I was with my family I decided to tie off a long cardigan at my waist to cover up and keep myself from getting chilly near the lake.

This last shot presented too much temptation, it had to be done.

Stay classy, readers.

Yummy Yogurt + Strawberries

Since I've moved out on my own, I've been eating a lot healthier (dorm food isn't exactly conducive to healthy living.) I've been experimenting with food combinations and ways to eat healthier without sacrificing flavor or satisfaction.

One of my favorite meals is this one -- a handful of strawberries cut into halves/quarters, a few tablespoons of fat-free yogurt, sprinkle of granola and a drizzle of honey. It's extremely satisfying and sweet, and only maybe 200 calories at the most. Works great as breakfast, or a snack between meals.

It seems to fulfill any craving I get for cereal too. Taste-wise it's a bit comparable to Special K with strawberries, but definitely less carbs.

I've also lost six pounds since I've moved into my apartment at a healthy rate of around 2 pounds per week. Last Summer, I lost fifteen pounds on Weight Watchers. I hit a plateau on that plan, but now I'm counting my calories and so far it's been working great. It's definitely a lot easier now that I have more control over what I eat or just keep in the house in general. I plan on posting more about my fitness journey, and I'd love to hear any advice that have from your experience with getting healthy!

Another True Blood Beauty Collection!

I am a ginormous True Blood fan, so I was super excited when I found out via InStyle that HSN will be releasing a beauty collection inspired by the show which will be available on August 9th. Tarte already made a relatively small True Blood collection which I did check out at Sephora, but in all honesty nothing seemed unique enough that I felt I had to have it.

The HSN collection appears to be much more extensive than Tarte's, and I'm especially intrigued by the Forsaken perfume (pictured below.) I'm a total sucker for a pretty bottle, and this one looks completely different (see: less girly) than anything else I already own. The scent is described as "... a very sexy fragrance that any woman can wear anytime when she wants to feel ultra-feminine, yet sultry."

The collection also includes a set of nailpolishes inspired by Sookie, Jessica and Pam for $25. Though they come as a set, I'm the most interested in "Bad Blood" (on the left) inspired by Pam.

 I would have preferred a girlier route with Pam, one of my favorite things about her style is how seamlessly she switches between leather-clad dominatrix-esque outfits to pink cardigans and pencil skirts and I think a homage to her versatility would have been a better reflection of her character. One of her best quotes is "I don't know what it is about me that makes people think I want to hear their problems. Maybe I smile too much. Maybe I wear too much pink." A hot pink polish with a bit of a twist -- black glitter maybe -- would have been way cooler in my opinion.

Fun fact: Pam is actually my spirit animal.

The center polish is called "Strange Love" and is inspired by Jessica, and I rather like the color choice. Jessica is as sultry as it gets, but she's also a bit goofy and naive. A sexy but not too dark color seems perfect. And then there's "New Flesh" inspired by Sookie. It's beige and bland. Fitting.

Are you a fan of True Blood? If so, how do you feel about the color choices for the characters? Tell me in the comments!

What's In My Bag?

I finally got my first Coach purse as a birthday present this year! I've never been a big fan of the repeated C print, I wanted something in a solid color that didn't scream "LOOK AT THE BRAND OF MY PURSE." I spotted this beauty from across the room and it was love at first sight.

I think it's the quilting on the front pocket that did it for me. It's a little reminiscent of the famous Chanel handbags that I covet.

Another detail that I love is the hot pink lining. I actually bought a hot pink trench coat for spring because I love being subtly matchy-matchy.

Of course, I had to get a huge one because I'm one of those ladies that likes to cart around all of her material possessions, y'know, "just in case". I can safely say that at any given time I am relatively well prepared for most non-life threatening emergencies. So, let's take a peeksie at what's inside, shall we?

1. {Guess Wallet}

I would love to have a matching Coach wallet some day, but for now I thought this Guess wallet went well enough with my purse.

2. {Fashionably Late Compact}

I was a model in my University's first fashion show, and I got this in my swag bag. It lights up!

3. {Cateye Sunglasses}

I think I've mentioned these on my blog like three times now, I love them! The shape isn't so dramatic that I get weird stares, but it adds a nice little retro touch no matter what I'm wearing.

4. {Strawberry Hand Sanitizer}

Because you never know when you'll touch something icky.

5. {Too Faced Makeup Bag}

This came with a Too Faced kit that I bought a few years ago, I love all the super-girly motifs. Roses? Check. Pearls? Check. Butterflies? Check. Eiffel Tower? Check. It's like someone just threw a bunch of things they figured girls like into a picture and called it a day. I'm not complaining.

6. {Emergency Kit}

I bought this little "emergency" kit from Sephora last year. It comes with things like deodorant wipes, a nail file, mini-sewing kit, etc. It's nice to have on hand for those little "Oh shit!" moments. I've added a few extra things, like bandages and bobby pins.

7. {Notebook & Pen}

I keep pen and paper handy to write down ideas for blog posts, or just little tasks that I need to accomplish.

8. {iTouch}

Nothing gets me through the hour and a half drive back home like plugging in my iPod and singing at the top of my lungs. I think half of the songs I have are by Nine Inch Nails, any other NIN fans out there?

9. {Various Lip Things}

I like to keep my options open when it comes to my lip products. I keep a stain, gloss and balm handy.

10. {Point and Shoot Camera}

I wish I could lug my DSLR around everywhere I go, but it's just not practical.

What do you keep in your purse? Tell me in the comments!
